Cafe and buildings on Highbury Fields

Can we have a rethink on the old cafe on Highbury Fields please. It is a much-loved place, as you can see from discussion such as in Nextdoor.com. It was closed prior to be pulled-down and now it has been announced that it would be too explensive to be rebuilt. No suggestion has been made about whether it could be just touched up under the previous much-admired up and reopened. Why not. That would be the third bulding on that part of Highbiry Fields to be allowed to rot away, the others being the old gardeners cottage and the nicer old wooden shelter. The shelter was another example of social cleansing, since it was much loved by youngsters and used at night by tramps. Both those groups should be supported I feel. The old cottage could have been rebuilt and provided another home in a delightful location.

    Volunteering

by Herb-T, about 1 year ago
As an active pensioner I was looking for local volunteering. I found an opportunity by chance with The Garden Classroom (TGC). Would you consider running a regular article on volunteers and volunteering as I am sure there are lots of local opportunities for people like myself, let alone organisations etc that are in need of some helping hands.

What happened to people friendly streets?!

I’m so disappointed that you massively wasted our time engaging and going to meetings on this project, got our hopes up that you might actually alleviate some of the huge increase in fumes and traffic on Offord rd then just dropped it all. How can you expect people to bother engaging with you when you act like that? Hugely unprofessional, disappointing and frustrating.

More solo Motorcycle bays with ground Anchors

by pancaldr2003, almost 2 years ago

Islington needs more solo motorcycle bays as there not enough of them! They also must be with ground anchors to act as a deterrent and prevent motorcycle theft, providing peace of mind to motorcyclists and reducing insurance costs

10 Benefits of Solo Motorcycle Bays in Islington:

    1. Efficient Use of Space + Flexibility in Urban Design:
      • Motorcycles require significantly less space than cars maximising the use of limited urban space and can be placed in areas where car parking would be impractical, such as narrow streets or awkwardly shaped spaces, benefiting the entire community.
    2. Reduced Traffic Congestion:

    2. Reduced Traffic Congestion:
      • Motorcycles are smaller and more manoeuvrable, which can help alleviate traffic congestion by reducing the number of cars on the road
    3. Environmental Benefits:
      • Motorcycles generally consume less fuel and emit fewer greenhouse gases compared to cars improving air quality.
    4. Increased Parking Availability:
      • With solo motorcycle bays, there is less competition for car parking spaces. This can reduce frustration for residents and visitors who drive
    5. Safety Improvements:
      • Motorcycles parked in car spaces can be difficult to see, leading to potential collisions.
    6. Support for Local Economy:
      • Convenient parking options encourage more motorcyclists to visit Islington, potentially boosting local business revenues.
    7. Encouragement of Motorcycling as an Economical Mode of Transport:
      • Motorcycles are often more affordable than cars and can be a practical transport option for residents and workers.
    8. Reduction in Illegal or Inconvenient Parking:
      • Without dedicated bays, motorcyclists may resort to parking on pavements or in unsafe areas, causing obstructions or potential hazards. Solo motorcycle bays reduce the likelihood of such issues, keeping public spaces clear and safe for pedestrians.
    9. Lower Infrastructure Costs:
      • Compared to car parking spaces, motorcycle bays require less surface area and infrastructure investments
    10. Promotion of a Progressive, Motorcycle-Friendly Community:
      • By providing dedicated motorcycle parking, Islington can foster a culture of inclusivity.

Best Locations for Solo Motorcycle Bays in order of importance:

    1. Near Public Transport Interchanges: near train and underground stations, bus stops, or cycle hire stations, facilitating multimodal transport options, making it easier for residents to combine motorcycling with other forms of transport.
    2. Near High-Demand Areas: such as markets, supermarkets, parks and recreational areas.
    3. On Smaller or Narrower Streets and in Residential Zones with Limited Parking
    4. Near Office and Commercial Buildings: reducing the need for long searches for parking, promoting punctuality and reducing stress.

By strategically locating solo motorcycle bays throughout Islington, the borough can enhance its urban environment, improve transport efficiency, and better meet the needs of its diverse population.

St. Paul's Court Kingsdown Road N19

by Monica Hall, almost 2 years ago
The recycling area outside St.Paul's Court is constantly an eyesore. The bins are always overflowing and it is a focus for fly tipping. It seems to be accepted that any kind of rubbish can be dumped there.

None of the stuff left there, especially the unwanted clothing can be fit for recycling by the time it is collected.

If is intended for the residents of St. Pauls Court why is it accessible from the street?

I have complained repeatedly but nothing is ever done about it.

Reinstate 2022 prices for EV parking permits

by Dario, about 2 years ago

In 2022, Islington Council charged £50 for annual EV parking permits.
The new 2024 price structure for the same vehicle has increased this cost significantly to £170 for EVs.

This drastic price hike discourages residents from owning electric vehicles, hindering progress towards a cleaner environment.
The increased cost burden contradicts the council's potential goals of promoting sustainable transportation.

Please can Islington Council reflect on the unfair increase in EV parking permit prices andreturn to the previous, more affordable structure.

    Extend Santander Cycle scheme

by davidel, about 2 years ago
    Hello,

I was wondering if there is any plans to extend the Santander Cycles Scheme to cover Islington.

The scheme is the most convenient and affordable cycle scheme in London and, on top of it, is way more neat than having just random electric bikes (lime, etc..) parked along the streets.

Islington is also very central and I am very surprised it is still not covered by Santander Cycles.

Is it possible to consider extending the scheme?

    Lime bikes.

It is impossible to walk, push a wheelchair or pushchair on some pavements . On the Lofting road with the junction of Hemmingford Road there were 5 bikes parked at the corner so I had to walk onto the road to get to the zebra crossing.

The number of lime bikes just being dumped on the pavement is increasing so my liveable neighbour is not safe for me .
