Tufnell Park street environment and greening improvements
As part of our commitment to creating a greener, healthier and more child-friendly borough, Islington Council, with support from Tufnell Park Ward councillors, is planning improvements to the street spaces in the Tufnell Park area.
We want to make these spaces more welcoming by adding planting and trees, as well as other features such as extra public seating and informal play elements for children. These changes aim to create pleasant places for people to stop, rest and spend time in, while making them more fun and engaging for children, as well as helping reduce to climate impacts and support biodiversity.
Update on zebra crossing on Dalmeny Avenue
Following the public consultation, which ran from 15 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, a decision was taken to proceed with the implementation of the Zebra Crossing on Dalmeny Avenue. Construction is due to start on 9 March, and is expected to take four weeks.
You can find more details on the scheme in the "More Information about our proposed projects" section.
Previous public consultation on proposed design for improvements to existing School Street
Our public consultation on our proposed design for improvements to the existing school street ran from Monday 19 January to Sunday 15 February 2026. We will now review the feedback received in order to inform a decision on whether and how to proceed. Please check back here for updates.
Islington Council, with support from Tufnell Park Ward councillors, is proposing further improvements to the existing School Street on Carleton Road and Dalmeny Road. Our aim is to make the streets greener, more child-friendly, and more comfortable and pleasant for everyone.
The School Street, introduced in 2020, has already helped to reduce congestion and pollution at school drop-off and pick-up times, making it easier and safer for children to walk, wheel and cycle to school.

As part of our public engagement in July 2025, we asked for your views on how the School Street and the spaces outside the two schools could be improved. We've listened to your feedback and used your ideas to help shape a draft design for the School Street improvements.
Some key features of our proposals are:
- New greening and tree planting on new pavement build-outs, narrowing the road and/or replacing parking
- New seating spaces for parents/carers and residents to wait and rest
- Playful features to make the spaces outside the schools more fun and engaging for children
- Making it easier and safer for people to walk and wheel on the pavements and across the road
- Creating space to enable these changes by removing 18 parking spaces on Dalmeny Road and 13 on Carleton Road, and relocating an existing bike hangar to further north on Dalmeny Road.

Next steps
Once we’ve gathered your feedback on our design to improve the existing School Street, we’ll consider it carefully before deciding whether and how to proceed. Please check back here for updates.
Update on improvements to five street spaces in the Tufnell Park area
Islington Council, with support from Tufnell Park Ward councillors, is planning improvements to five local spaces shown on the map.
Our aim is to make these spaces greener, more welcoming and accessible - whether for passing through, enjoying moments of play or sitting and spending time there.
Every space will include new planting and greenery. Four of the locations will also feature seating to provide comfortable places to rest or connect with neighbours, along with playful features for children.
In May 2025 we asked for your views on how these spaces could be improved. In September 2025 we consulted on designs for each of the five spaces. We received encouraging feedback, with widespread support for the five schemes and some helpful suggestions for further improvements.
We have listened to your feedback and made some changes to the final designs, which we plan to implement in stages from February 2026.
You can view the final designs and a summary of the consultation feedback in the Documents section of this page. Summaries of our plans for each space are in the "More Information about our proposed projects" section.
