Proposals for outside Tufnell Park Primary School gates (Dalmeny Road)

    You told us:

    • The narrow footway outside the school gates on Dalmeny Road causes congestion at drop-off/pick-up times
    • There is no seating or shade for parents/carers waiting outside the school gates here
    • You have concerns about traffic speeds and ease and safety of crossing the road
    • You would like more greening, trees and playful features for children

    We propose to:

    • Create an attractive space outside the gates on Dalmeny Road for parents/carers to wait with seating and playful features for children
    • Install raingardens along both sides of the road to help manage water run-off through sustainable drainage
    • Widen the pavements on Dalmeny Road at the junction with Anson Road to shorten the crossing distance
    • Enable space for these improvements by removing 11 residential and seven residential/pay-by-phone parking spaces on Dalmeny Road and relocating two bike hangars

Proposals for outside The Bridge Secondary entrance and Tufnell Park Primary reception (Carleton Road)

    You told us:

    • That parents/carers in cars need to be able to pull up close to the gate of The Bridge Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) secondary school on Carleton Road
    • You have concerns about traffic speeds and desire for safety and ease of crossing the road
    • You would like more greening and trees outside the schools as well as playful features for children

    We propose to:

    • Install planting beds/raingardens featuring inclusive play features for children in place of some parking on both sides of the road (one residential and 12 residential/pay-by-phone parking spaces). The two disabled badge holder spaces on this road will remain in place
    • Retain most of the parking immediately outside The Bridge’s walking and wheeling entrance to assist school drop-off and pick-up
    • Create a small, attractive space outside the Tufnell Park Primary reception entrance on Carleton Road with seating for people to sit and wait

Dalmeny Avenue zebra crossing

    Zebra crossing on Dalmeny Avenue

Feedback from previous engagement with residents, parents/carers and the school highlighted concerns about the safety of the current informal crossing on Dalmeny Avenue, south of Carleton Road, which is part of a key walking route. Following the public consultation, which ran from 15 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, a decision was taken to proceed with the implementation of the Zebra Crossing on Dalmeny Avenue. Construction commenced in early March 2026, and the scheme was completed with the crossing officially opened in June 2026.

Key elements of the design included:

    • Improved crossing provision for pupils and residents by upgrading the existing informal crossing to a zebra crossing, addressing a clearly identified desire line.
    • Addition of greening to enhance the streetscape and contribute to environmental benefits.
    • Installation of a raised table with anti-skid surfacing, ensuring vehicles stop for pedestrians and further slowing traffic on both approaches.
    • Build-outs on either side of the crossing to improve visibility, with the addition of a central island reservation.
    • Re-location of existing Hire Bike Bay and removal of approximately three parking bays.

These measures reflect priorities shared by the local community and school, aiming to create a safer and more pleasant route for everyone. You can view the final design for the zebra crossing below or download it here.

Improvements to five street spaces

Improving Tufnell Park Road / Carleton Road public space

The public space at the junction in front of Tufnell Park Estate has been revitalised with greenery, seating and playful features. The changes have created a more pleasant environment for people passing through or stopping to rest. We have:

    • Replaced existing paving with low-level planting, bringing greenery, shade, and biodiversity. The planting of up to six new trees is planned for later in the year.
    • Kept a paved footway around the new central green area and added three roadside planting beds for extra greenery.
    • Installed an additional bench alongside the existing benches to create a pleasant resting spot.
    • Added stepping posts and other informal play features for children on their way to school or other journeys.
    • Removed the recycling bins and repositioned the cycle stands along the paved edge and on the opposite side of Carleton Road by the church.

Improving Dalmeny Road existing traffic filter space

This space at the existing traffic filter is on a key route to two local schools and has been enhanced with planting, seating and features for children to enjoy moments of play, while also creating a more welcoming environment. The design aimed to improve the route for people walking, wheeling and cycling while maintaining the existing traffic restriction. We have:

    • Replaced paving with low-level planting, adding greenery and biodiversity. The planting of two new trees is planned for later in the year.
    • Installed two new benches creating a place to stop and rest.
    • Added stepping posts and other informal play features to make the space more engaging for children on their way to school.
    • Extended the cycleway through the traffic filter with a raised section to slow cyclists for pedestrian safety, retaining the central lockable bollard.

Improving Huddleston Road existing traffic filter space

We’ve redesigned the existing traffic filter to make walking, wheeling and cycling through the area easier and more accessible, while maintaining the traffic restriction. The new layout has simplified the space and added greenery, creating a pleasant route for passing through rather than a place to stop. We have:

    • Replaced paving with low-level planting, adding greenery and biodiversity. The planting of two new trees is planned for later in the year.
    • Realigned the space for easier movement and replaced the existing fire gate with a lockable bollard to maintain fire brigade access while preventing other motor traffic.

    Improving Cardwell Terrace public space

We’re transforming this space at Cardwell Terrace to make it greener, more inviting and better for everyday use by residents, while supporting the local shop and offering a pleasant place to stop and rest. We are:

    • Replacing existing paving with new low-level planting, relocating one small tree into the planting area to add greenery and biodiversity.
    • Keeping a paved footway around the edge for easy movement.
    • Adding stepping posts as an informal play feature for children, alongside habitat features to support wildlife.
    • Moving the existing bench to the front of the space and adding a new single seat for extra seating.
    • Repositioning cycle stands and the litter bin for better access, and introducing new bin enclosures and food bin

Improving Hilldrop Road / Hilldrop Crescent public space

We’re creating an open, green, and welcoming space at this location, designed to feel natural and accessible. It will offer a pleasant spot to pause and connect during the school run or daily journeys, with playful features for children and seating for relaxation and social interaction. We are:

    • Replacing existing paving with low-level planting in the centre of the space, adding greenery, shade, and biodiversity, while keeping a paved footway around the space. Up to three new trees will be planted later in the year.
    • Creating a new seating area that will include three benches and one individual seat, with an additional bench near the junction.
    • Adding stepping posts and other informal play elements to make the space enjoyable for children heading to nearby schools.
