Street environment improvements in St Peter's and Canalside and St Mary's and St James' wards

How we want to improve streets and spaces in this area

As part of our commitment to building a healthier, safer and more child-friendly borough, Islington Council - with support from your local ward councillors - is proposing improvements to the street environment in St Peter’s and Canalside and St Mary’s and St James’ wards.

In 2020, we introduced the St Peter’s Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) as a trial, making it permanent in 2022 after consultation, to create cleaner, less congested and more people-friendly streets in the area.

Now we want to build on these changes by making the area greener, safer, more welcoming and accessible for everyone, while supporting local businesses.

We consulted on improvements to the street environment of St Peter's Street and at the junction of Packington Street/Prebend Street in February-March 2026.

In summer 2025 we asked for your ideas on improving public spaces at St Peter's Street and Packington Street/Prebend Street.

We listened and used your feedback to help shape draft designs for these two spaces.

We then consulted on improvements to the street environment of St Peter's Street and at the junction of Packington Street/Prebend Street between Monday 23 February and Sunday 22 March 2026.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our feedback survey, and/or came to our engagement event on Wednesday 4 March, to tell us your views on our proposals.

Next steps

We will consider the feedback we have receive to inform a decision on whether and how to implement proposed improvements at these two locations. We will provide an update on the project in due course.

Improvements to three local street spaces in the area

Between 15 September and 5 October 2025, we consulted on proposals to improve three locations:

• Britannia Row (St Mary's and St James' ward)
• Graham Street (St Peter's and Canalside ward)
• Colebrooke Row existing traffic filter between Vincent Terrace and Duncan Street (St Peter's and Canalside ward)

Please see the following updates on these proposed improvements (and for more details see the "More Information about our proposed projects" section):

• Graham Street: in early 2025 we implemented new pavement build-outs with a new informal crossing, greenery, trees and cycle parking.
• Britannia Row: we are introducing new greenery and trees on the pavement - works started December 2025 and are due to be completed following the introduction of measures to address vehicles overrunning planted areas.
• Colebrooke Row: we consulted on proposed improvements at the existing traffic filter between Vincent Terrace and Duncan Street including replacing the existing planter boxes with widened footways, new greenery and improved informal crossings and cycle parking. We have decided to implement this scheme. Works are expected to commence on 24 August 2026 and take approximately three weeks to complete. We are writing to local residents and businesses in the area to inform them of this decision and provide further information about the planned works.

We have already made some other improvements in this area including:

• Bishop Street (St Mary's and St James' ward) - in November 2025 we resurfaced the road, which was in poor condition, to provide a safer and more comfortable surface for people cycling on Cycleway 27
• Noel Road (St Peter's and Canalside ward): in summer 2025 we implemented improvements outside Hanover Primary School to enhance the existing school street - see our dedicated webpage for details.
