Islington Greener Together
Islington Council launched Round Two of the Islington Greener Together programme in February 2024, inviting residents, businesses, and community groups—with support from their neighbours—to submit ideas to green publicly accessible spaces in their neighbourhoods. With the support of the council, local people can bring their ideas to life and make their streets greener. One of these streets is Noel Road, where local people have told us that they would like to introduce greening on the street outside of Hanover Primary School.
Noel Road
The project site is located outside of Hanover Primary School, within the St. Peter's and Canalside Ward.
Co-design workshop
In January 2025 we held a co-design workshop, which local people could register to attend. During the workshop attendees took part in a design exercise, where they shared their ideas for where and what types of changes they would like to see take place on Noel Road. In February 2025, we also met pupils from Hanover Primary School to understand what changes they would like to see. The suggestions made were then used to help shape the initial design proposal for Noel Road that we are now sharing for feedback.
Initial design proposal
Our initial design proposes the following on Noel Road:
A pavement build-out in front of Hanover Primary School’s main entrance to create additional space for parents, guardians and pupils during drop-off and pick-up times.
New planting beds to enhance biodiversity and contribute to the overall greening of the streetscape.
Three benches to provide resting areas for parents, carers, and pedestrians.
The removal of pedestrian guardrails at pavement edges to declutter the streetscape, improve pedestrian accessibility, and create a more welcoming environment.
New Sheffield bike stands to support active travel.
Introduction of boulders at either end of the proposed design.
Thermoplastic design features in the road, incorporating tree leaves associated with classroom forms at Hanover Primary School.
The removal of one car parking space to the west of the junction of Noel Road and Hanover Yard to improve vehicle sightlines.
Tell us what you think about the proposal
To share your views on the initial design proposal, please complete our survey by midnight on Sunday 4 May 2025.
In addition to the survey, we will also be holding an engagement session on Thursday 1 May 2025, between 6pm and 6.45pm. During the session, attendees can share their feedback and ask officers questions regarding the initial design proposal. The feedback received via the survey and during the engagement session will help inform any changes to the final design proposal for Noel Road.
If you would like to attend the workshop, please register your interest by following the link here (External link) and completing the form. You can also sign up in-person at Islington Town Hall reception (N1 2UD). We will confirm your place and details of the location by email or phone; please only attend if you receive this confirmation, as spaces are limited. Priority will be given to residents and businesses within close proximity to the project.
Following the feedback period (Monday 21 April 2025 – Sunday 4 May 2025 ), we will use the feedback received to help inform any changes to the final design proposal for Noel Road. Once the design has been finalised, we will aim to begin installation of the proposal in Autumn 2025.
