We are creating proposals to invest in the Finsbury Leisure Centre and Toffee Park areas and build a new medical centre.

The proposals include:

  • Refurbished and more accessible leisure facilities
  • A new medical centre
  • A new multi-use games area (MUGA)
  • Improvements to Radnor Street Gardens
  • Safer, greener, and more welcoming open spaces
  • Better connections between local facilities to help improve local residents’ wellbeing

The goal is to offer better facilities for everyone and support a healthier, greener Islington.

Come hear about our plans

We invited local people to a number of in person events to present our ideas. It was an opportunity to meet the project team and see these initial proposals.

The following events were held:

  • Wednesday 26 November 2025, 3-6pm, Finsbury Leisure Centre, Norman Street, London, EC1V 3PU
  • Friday 28 November 2025, 10am-1pm, Vibast Community Centre, Main Hall, 167 Old Street, London, EC1V 9NH
  • Saturday 29 November 2025, 10am-1pm, St Luke’s Community Centre, St. Luke’s Meeting Room, 90 Central Street, London EC1V 8AJ

We also held an online even on 25 November 2025. Slides and engagement boards shared during the event are available in the Documents section on this page. Note regarding resource accessibility - The 'Slides from an online event' and 'Resident Engagement Boards' document on this page are not currently fully accessible to WCAG 2.2 AA standards. We will replace these resources with fully accessible versions by Thursday 4 December.

Next steps

The overwhelming feedback from engagement to date was that retention of the open space and the four football pitches was good. There was support for the introduction of the new medical centre and the improvements to the open spaces. There were mixed responses to the idea of moderately increasing the amount of green public open space and therefore moderately decreasing the size of two football pitches. The reservation to this idea was mostly expressed by supporters of the football pitches who felt that any reduction in pitch size would be detrimental to the playing and coaching experience. No decision has been taken yet, and this option will be presented for further discussion in the spring 2026 consultation. There was support for the improvements to the Finsbury Leisure Centre and surrounding areas.

The council will carry out a comprehensive public consultation on the project in spring 2026 when the council expects a full design team is appointed and they have started to prepare ideas.

This public consultation will take the form of online and in person events and will also include some option studies and co-design workshop activity that focus on the public open space.
