Islington Greener Together
Islington Council launched Round Two of the Islington Greener Together programme in February 2024, inviting residents, businesses, and community groups—with support from their neighbours—to submit ideas to green publicly accessible spaces in their neighbourhoods. With the support of the council, local people can bring their ideas to life and make their streets greener. One of these streets is Wharfdale Road, where local people have told us that they would like to introduce greening.
Wharfdale Road
The Wharfdale Road site is located close to the junction with Caledonian Road, within the Caledonian Ward.
Co-design workshop
In December 2024 we held a co-design workshop, which local people could register to attend. During the workshop attendees took part in a design exercise, where they shared their ideas on the changes, they would like to see take place on Wharfdale Road. The suggestions made were then used to help shape the initial design proposal for Wharfdale Road that we are now sharing for feedback.
Feedback period
Once the initial design proposal for Wharfdale Road was developed, it was shared online via the project website and made available at Lewis Carroll Children’s Library. Local people could provide feedback on the design between Monday 7 April 2025 – Sunday 20 April 2025, through an online survey on the project website or via hard copies available at Islington Town Hall reception. Additionally, an in-person engagement session was held at the Jeans Stokes Community Centre on Wednesday 16 April 2025, allowing attendees to share their feedback on the design proposals and ask officers questions. The feedback from both the survey and the in-person engagement session was reviewed and considered in the development of the final design.
Wharfdale Road Design
The final design for Wharfdale Road includes the following:
The introduction of an in-ground planting bed on the existing pavement build-out, featuring a variety of plant species to provide year-round colour and interest while supporting local fauna, particularly pollinating insects.
Installation of a bench with a backrest, armrests, and space for a wheelchair user to transfer.
Introduction of stepping stones through the in-ground planting bed to provide access for maintenance.
Reinstatement of the pavement over the existing redundant tree pit.

Works to implement the improvements
We have now finalised the schedule of works to deliver the project. The works will be carried out on Wharfdale Road from Monday 14 July 2025 and will take up to a week.
Wharfdale Road will not be closed to vehicles or pedestrians.
To facilitate the delivery of the works we will be suspending a number of parking bays close to the project site. These bays will be suspended for the duration of the works and the parking suspensions will be removed if the works are completed earlier than anticipated
We apologise for any inconvenience that the site works may cause, and we would like to thank you in advance for your co-operation during this time. If you have any queries or questions, please contact use at IGTproject@islington.gov.uk.
