Improvements to local street spaces in St Peter's & Canalside and St Mary's & St James' wards

As part of our improvements to the area, we are proposing to make changes at three locations:

    • Britannia Row (St Mary's & St James' ward)
    • Graham Street (St Peter's & Canalside ward)
    • Colebrooke Row existing traffic filter between Vincent Terrace and Duncan Street (St Peter's & Canalside ward)

We consulted you between 15 September and 5 October 2025 on our proposals for these spaces, and are taking into account the feedback you gave us.

You can read a report summarising the consultation findings, and a summary of issues raised and officer responses.

Please see updates below on these proposed schemes.

    Britannia Row

We proposed to create more greenery on Britannia Row beside the Cumming Estate, to help make the street more resilient to climate impacts including flooding and heat stress.

The location on Britannia Row where we proposed to make improvements

We consulted you in September-October 2025 on our proposed design to create new low-level planting along the pavement between the existing trees, without reducing the width of the pavement space for walking and wheeling.

You can download this design as a PDF.

We have decided to implement this scheme with some small changes (please see the final design), and are constructing these from December 2025.

    Graham Street

We want to improve Graham Street between City Road and Coombs Road by softening the hard surfaces of the street environment with new trees and greenery, calming traffic speeds and making it easier to cross the road.

The location on Graham Street where we proposed to make improvements

We consulted you in September-October 2025 on our proposals to:

    • Build out the pavement at two locations to create space for new trees and planting and help calm traffic speeds on this long, straight stretch of road
    • Create a new informal crossing outside the student accommodation to make it easier and safer to cross the street
    • Introduce new on-street cycle stands
    • The scheme will require the removal of approximately six residential parking spaces

We have decided to implement this scheme with some small changes (please see the final design) from January 2026.

Colebrooke Row existing traffic filter (between Vincent Terrace and Duncan Street)

We want to upgrade the existing traffic filter on Colebrooke Row, to increase the amount of greenery and resilience of the planting, as well as making it easier to walk and wheel and cross the road at this location.

The existing traffic filter on Colebrooke Row where we want to make improvements

    We are proposing to:

    • Replace the existing raised planters with new in-ground planting, increasing the amount of greenery here
    • Widen the pavements to increase the visual impact of the traffic filter in calming traffic, create more space to walk and wheel and make it safer to cross the road
    • Relocate the informal crossing closer to the junction with Duncan Street so it is more conveniently located for people crossing
    • Relocate the existing cycle stands within the space to make the pavements less cluttered and more inclusive, and increase the amount of cycle parking

You can download this design as a PDF.

Please see this page for updates on this proposed scheme.

Improvements on St Peter's Street and Packington Street/Prebend Street

Between 30 June and 20 July 2025, we asked local people including residents and businesses to tell us their experiences of using the street at two locations in the St Peter's area, and their ideas for how they would like to see these two locations improved:

    • St Peter's Street between Rheidol Terrace and Frome Street
    • Packington Street/Prebend Street junction area

We want to increase the amount of trees and greenery, make the streets easier and safer to cross and more child-friendly, and support local businesses to thrive.

Please see the following details of the two spaces and the types of measures we could introduce to improve them:

    1. St Peter's Street between Rheidol Terrace and Frome Street

We would like to make this area of the street greener and more of a place to spend time in, and support local businesses to thrive.

    2. Packington Street/Prebend Street junction area

We want to create a safer junction here by narrowing the road way, as well as enhance the space near the local businesses and amenities.

We provided some example images that show some ways that we could potentially improve the street environment in these spaces:

Images of potential ways we could improve these street locations: road safety improvements, planting and street trees, seating, informal play features for children, cycle parking, and public art

Why do we want to make these types of changes?

    • Pavement widening can create safer crossings and contribute to a more accessible walking and wheeling experience
    • Greening can help soften the street environment, mitigate climate impacts such as heat and flooding, and support biodiversity
    • Create additional places for people to stop and rest in the area when walking and wheeling, supporting physical and mental wellbeing.

    Next steps

Now that we have heard people's views and ideas, we will be using this feedback to help us develop designs for these two street locations.

Once we have created draft designs we will share them in a public consultation to hear your views.
