Grovedale Estate (Levison Way) Communal Play Spaces

Islington Council and the Thriving Neighbourhoods programme is committed to improving and transforming shared spaces on estates in Islington, with the intention of leaving a legacy that positively benefits the residents and builds on strengthening the community.

We are working in partnership with residents, to provide them with an opportunity to tell us what improvements they want to see and be actively involved in making a positive change to their communities and neighbourhoods.

Great news! We are upgrading the communal play space at Levison Way rejuvenating it back into an attractive community space for all to use.

This is an opportunity for you to tell us what improvements you want to see and be actively involved in making a positive change to your community and neighbourhood. We want you to be proud of where you live and be empowered to make a positive difference.

We are looking to implement projects that promote community cohesion, allowing people to come together and improve their mental and physical wellbeing.

The options under consideration include:

  • Keep current arrangement with the infants play area and pitch/ball court space and give both an upgrade, including new play equipment, seating, surfacing, fencing, basketball hoops and goals.
  • Keep infant play area and transform the ball court in to a junior play area with challenging play equipment including junior calisthenics bars/outdoor gym equipment and new surfacing.
  • Combine the two areas to transform the space into a communal multi-level area that integrates the infant and junior inclusive play with increased seating, planting, cycle storage, and general accessibility improvements.

All of the above suggestions are subject to feasibility and planning checks and are currently early ideas.

The communal space upgrades could include and look to address any of the following and we are keen to know what else you would like to see included, such as;

- New play equipment and surfacing.

- The age range would you like us to aim the space towards

- Specific play equipment you would like included- slide, swings, climbing equipment, balance beams

- Specific accessible and inclusive equipment you would like included

- Wall mounted educational play boards

- Interactive floor games (eg. snakes and ladders, hop scotch etc)

- New benches and informal seating

- Fencing and boundary treatment improvements

- Improved sightlines and visibility

- Junior outdoor gym equipment/calisthenics bars

- Sports line marking e.g. Football, basket ball, netball

- Football goals, basketball hoops or both

- Additional cycle storage outside of these spaces

- Additional litter bins

How you can get involved

All residents living on Grovedale Estate, Bowerman Court, Levison Way, Turpin Way were invited to complete a survey on how they would like to see the spaces used and this has now closed. We have developed initial concept designs which we will be sharing with residents for your feedback.

How we will use your feedback

All survey responses have been reviewed and we have developed initial concept designs from these for further consultation.

Pop Up

We are holding a pop-up event on 4th June 2024 from 3 - 6pm where residents will have further opportunity to share their opinions for the spaces and talk to us about the proposals.

If you are unable to attend the pop up then please email us your thoughts on the design at

thrivingneighbourhoods@islington.gov.uk

The Next Steps

Following feedback on the initial designs and the pop up event design ideas will be revised, finalised and shared with residents prior to installation.
