Islington is a small and lively part of inner London, where people from many different backgrounds live together. Although Islington is a young borough, the number of people aged 65 and over is growing.
There are different types of care homes in Islington. Some support people aged 65 and over, and others support people with mental health needs and/or learning disabilities. There are seven care homes in Islington that mainly support people aged 65 and over. The council pays for rooms in five of these care homes through long-term contracts. When more rooms are needed, the council pays for extra rooms in care homes inside or outside of Islington.
The council’s long-term contracts with the seven care homes supporting people over the age of 65 are coming to an end in the next two to six years. This gives the council a chance to plan for the future so people who live care homes (or may do so in the future) can continue to receive the best possible care.
We want to speak to a lot of people, and in particular people who:
live in care homes
might need to move to a care home in the future
family members & unpaid carers
people working in care homes (or somewhere that offers similar care and support)
We want to listen to your thoughts on what is working well and ideas for the future.
This page will explain how the council is planning future services. We will update it often so you can see what is going on and how you can get involved, so please return to this page regularly.

Islington's care home services is currently at this stage
We will talk to residents, organisations who provide care and support to people in care homes ('providers'), and people who work in the Council and in care homes.
We will also look at data to help us understand what Islington needs from its care home services.
Stage 2: Planning & designing
this is an upcoming stage for Islington's care home services
Using what we learnt in Stage 1, we will write:
A plan for what the services should be like. This is called a 'service specification'.
A plan for how we will choose the providers to run the services. This is called a 'procurement strategy'.
Stage 3: Finding the providers
this is an upcoming stage for Islington's care home services
We will use a process called procurement to choose the providers to run the care home services and make sure public money is spent responsibly and people receive the best care.
Stage 4: Monitoring
this is an upcoming stage for Islington's care home services
Once the providers for the care homes are chosen, we will check their work regularly to make sure the services are great quality.
