Islington Greener Together

Islington Council launched Round Two of the Islington Greener Together programme in February 2024, inviting residents, businesses, and community groups—with support from their neighbours—to submit ideas to green publicly accessible spaces in their neighbourhoods. With the support of the council, local people can bring their ideas to life and make their streets greener. One of these streets is Godson Street, where local people have told us that they would like to introduce greening along the street.

Godson Street

Godson Street is a pedestrianised street situated between Chapel Market and White Lion Street, within the Barnsbury Ward.

Co-design workshop

In November 2024 we held a co-design workshop, which local people could register to attend. During the workshop attendees took part in a design exercise, where they shared their ideas and marked up plans to show where and what types of changes they would like to see take place on Godson Street. The suggestions made were then used to help shape the initial design proposal for Godson Street that we are now sharing for feedback.

Feedback period

Once the initial design proposal for Godson Street was developed, it was shared online via the project website and made available at Islington Town Hall reception. Local people could provide feedback on the design between Monday 17 February 2025 and Sunday 2 March 2025 through an online survey on the project website or via hard copies available at Islington Town Hall reception. Additionally, an in-person engagement session was held at the Claremont Project on Wednesday 26 February 2025, allowing attendees to share their feedback on the design proposals and ask officers questions. The feedback from both the survey and the in-person engagement session was reviewed and considered in the development of the final design.

Godson Street final design

The final design for Godson Street includes the following:

  • The introduction of 12 wooden planters at varying heights along the length of Godson Street.
  • The relocation of the three existing cycle stands at the southern end of Godson Street into the centre of the street.
  • The addition of two cycle stands at the northern end of the street.
  • The removal of existing bollards at the northern and southern end of Godson Street, with their function of preventing vehicle entry replaced by wooden planters.
  • The introduction of seating as part of one of the planters at the southern end of Godson Street.
