Share your views on a proposed School Street at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School by Sunday 20 July

As part of our commitment to make Islington’s streets greener, healthier, and more welcoming for all, we are proposing to introduce a School Street at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School as part of Phase One of the Secondary School Streets programme.

This project aims to deliver better air quality around schools by reducing the negative environmental impacts of traffic and idling vehicles. We are also looking to make the area safer for students and the wider community through a reduction in road danger due to decreased traffic.

We want to make sure that the changes we’re making reflect the needs of the local community – including school pupils, parents, carers, teachers' residents and businesses.

Between now and Sunday 20 July 2025, we’re asking for your ideas and insights into how we can improve the area for all.

About Islington’s School Streets

A School Street is where roads around the school temporarily close to traffic to become a pedestrian and cycle zone during the school’s opening and closing times.

Since 2019, Islington Council has introduced 35 School Streets covering 36 Primary Schools and are now expanding the School Streets programme to secondary schools.

Secondary School Streets aim to reduce road danger for students and other road users through a decrease in traffic, make it easier and safer for students to independently travel to school, and reduce the negative impacts of traffic and idling vehicles, including on air quality.

Potential School Streets Plans

Improvements outside the school gate

We are exploring making improvements to the space around the school to make the area safer, greener and more attractive. This might include:

  • New greening - planting and trees

  • Cycle parking

  • Student co-designed artwork

  • New seating

  • Improvements to pavements

  • Safer, upgraded crossings

Examples of possible public realm improvements, from top: new seating, safer raised crossing, new planting and cycle parking.

    Traffic Filtering

We are proposing to introduce measures that will reduce traffic outside the school gates through traffic filtering. Traffic filtering would make it safer for people to walk, wheel and cycle in the area through a decrease in vehicle volumes. For School Streets, traffic filters operate temporarily for 45 minutes in the morning and late afternoon during term time to coincide with pupil arrival and departures.

Traffic filters are restrictions in the street to prevent motor vehicles passing through. They are marked with standard traffic signs to be visible to all drivers. Camera enforcement (ANPR) is used to allow emergency services and other exempt vehicles to continue to access the area.

All addresses on a School Street remain accessible by vehicle, even with a traffic filter in place.
