Share your views on proposals for a School Street at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School by Sunday, 7 December 2025.

As part of our commitment to make Islington’s streets safer, healthier, and more welcoming for all, we are proposing to introduce a School Street at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School as part of Phase One of the Secondary School Streets programme.

This project aims to deliver better air quality around schools by reducing the negative environmental impacts of traffic and idling vehicles. We are also looking to make the area safer for students and the wider community through a reduction in road danger due to decreased traffic.

We want to make sure that the changes we’re making reflect the needs of the local community – including school pupils, parents, carers, teachers' residents and businesses.

Between now and Sunday, 7 December 2025, we want to know what you think of the proposed School Street, and environmental improvements outside the school gates.

What you have told us so far

From June to July 2025, we engaged with EGA students, parents, carers and residents. We ran an online survey where we asked people to share their views on traffic in the area, and what improvements they would like to see as part of a School Street scheme. We also ran an in-person drop-in session for parents, carers and residents and a workshop with selected EGA pupils.

During the early engagement period, you told us the following were issues in the area around EGA:

  • Traffic levels are a problem on roads outside the school, and crossing the street (particularly at the junction of Rodney and Donegal and Collier Streets) feels unsafe

  • Stationary cars with their engines running are common at school arrival and departure times

  • Pavement parking is common outside EGA

You told us that you would most like to see the following improvements to the environment delivered as part of a School Street:

  • Improve crossings near the school gates to slow down traffic, and make the area safer for people walking and cycling.

  • Widen the pavements to move traffic and emissions further from the school gate, and create more space for students.

  • Introduce new greening including low-level planting to create a pleasant environment and prevent instances of pavement parking.

Feedback from the online survey and our in-person events has been summarised in an 'Early Engagement Report' which is available on the right-hand side of this page under 'Useful Documents.'

Proposed School Street at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson

We listened to your feedback and we are proposing to introduce measures that will reduce traffic outside the school gates by introducing a timed School Street.

A School Street is where streets around a school temporarily close to traffic to become a pedestrian and cycle zone during the school's opening and closing times.

The proposed School Street zone for the EGA School Street would include:

  • The full extent of Donegal Street (from Rodney Street to Penton Street)
  • The full extent of Rodney Street (from Wynford Road to Pentonville Road)
  • Collier Street (from Cumming Street to Rodney Street)

The proposed operational times of the School Street would be from 8.15-9.00am and 3.00-4.30pm Monday to Friday (during term times only) to match up with the schools opening and closing times.

There is an existing School Street on Cynthia Street outside The Gower Primary School. As part of this project, we are proposing to extend The Gower School Street for 45 minutes in the afternoon.

This would create a single School Street zone that encompasses the proposed EGA School Street and the existing Gower School Street.

The proposed extent of the EGA School Street zone, including the existing School Street at The Gower School on Cynthia Street.
Access to the School Street zone

Exemptions for the School Street zone will be issued to applicants who live or work in the School Street zone, or for Blue Badge holders who require access to parking near a building in the School Street zone.

Signs would inform drivers of the restrictions before the entrances to the closed streets. We will identify non-registered vehicles entering the street during operational times by camera and issue a penalty charge notice.

Improvements outside the school gates

In addition to the proposed School Street zone, we are proposing a number of changes to improve the environment outside of the school gates on Donegal and Rodney Streets including:

  • Widening the pavement outside the school, moving traffic and its emissions further from the school gate and improving air quality.
  • Improving crossings (on Donegal Street and on Rodney Street) to slow down traffic and make the area safer for people walking and cycling. Crossing improvements will include new tactile paving, re-lining of crossings and widened pavements at the junction.
  • Introduce colourful artwork on the road outside the school to make drivers aware of the school and encourage them to slow their speed

  • Introduce new greening, including low-level planting to improve air quality and create a more pleasant environment, while also preventing instances of pavement parking.

About Islington's School Streets

A School Street is where roads around the school temporarily close to traffic to become a pedestrian and cycle zone during the school's opening and closing times.

Since 2019, Islington Council has introduced 35 School Streets covering 36 Primary Schools and are now expanding the School Streets programme to secondary schools.

Secondary School Streets aim to reduce road danger for students and other road users through a decrease in traffic, make it easier and safer for students to independently travel to school, and reduce the negative impacts of traffic and idling vehicles, including on air quality.
