Consultation has concluded
We consulted on proposals to reduce the number of places available for reception class admission at Hanover, Hargrave Park and Vittoria Primary schools and Year 7 places at Beacon High Secondary school.
This is because the evidence on Islington’s school age population indicates a year-on-year reduction due to falling births across the local area that are likely to remain an ongoing trend. This is also a feature in many inner-London authorities.
We did not propose any other changes to admission arrangements for Islington community schools. We have clarified the process for delaying and deferring admission to reception class for children reaching compulsory school age, as well as the process for requesting that a child is placed out of chronological age group.
Consultation outcome
We received three responses during the six-week statutory consultation with:
parents of children between the ages of two and 18.
Islington residents who may have an interest in the proposed admission arrangements.
all other admission authorities within Islington’s boundary, including faith, trust and foundation schools. We also sent the consultation to the Catholic and Church of England dioceses who manage faith schools in Islington.
neighbouring local authorities.
All respondents agreed with the council’s proposals to reducesurplus school places in response to falling birth rates and fewer children starting Year 7 and Reception.
After reviewing this feedback, we made the decision to go ahead with the proposals to reduce the number of places at Beacon High Secondary School, Hanover, Hargrave Park and Vittoria Primary Schools. You can read a copy of the decision report, which was also agreed by the council’s Executive on our website.
