What interventions could we consider at COLPAI

We want to work closely with the school community in order to improve the space around COLPAI for students, parents and the wider community.  Here are some of the interventions that we may be able to consider for Golden Lane outside the school entrance:

    Zebra crossing

Zebra crossing across a road with trees in the background

This could provide a safe place to cross where vehicles must stop and give way to people crossing. Requires lots of space to implement and can impact on local parking and loading.

    Road narrowing/ widening the footway

An urban street with wide pavements with benches and planting on outside shops
This could encourage vehicles to move more slowly. It could also create more space outside the school entrance for people walking or wheeling*, or for adding features like seating, cycling parking or planting. Sometimes requires lots of space to implement and can impact on local parking and loading.

    Footway buildouts

Junction of local streets with road narrowed by wider pavements with planting on

If narrowing the whole road isn’t possible, implementing ‘buildouts’ at certain location could be possible. These could encourage vehicles to slow down, while providing space for planting, seating or cycle parking.

Sometimes requires space to implement and can impact on local parking and loading.

    Raised table/ traffic calming

Street outside a school with planting on the pavement, and a crossing with traffic lights

Raising the level of the road outside the school can encourage vehicles to slow down, while providing a level surface for people walking, wheeling and cycling to cross the road.

Colourful artwork on the road and on the footway

Colourful images of autumn leaves on a road surface

This would make drivers aware that they are passing a school, while providing a more pleasant and stimulating environment outside the school

    Low level planting and greenery

Planting on a pavement with trees and awnings in the background

This could not only provide a more pleasant environment outside the school but could also be located to create a green buffer between the footway and the road, reducing exposure to air pollution. This can also improve drainage and flood resistance.

    Trees

    Trees on an urban street

Like low level greenery, trees create a more pleasant environment and reduce exposure to air pollution. They can also provide shade and shelter.

    Seating

Benches on a pedestrianised paved area, with green planting alongside

Could provide a place to stop and rest outside the school entrance. Benches or individual seats can be implemented.

    Play features

A street with nice paving, planting and wooden play features

Could provide a more stimulating environment for children outside the school entrance. These can be incorporated in low level planting. These also make drivers aware they are passing a school.

    Cycle parking

Brightly coloured cycle stands on a pavement outside a schoolProvides somewhere for cycles to be to be stored securely on street. Cargo bike parking can also be implemented.

    Colourful guardrail

Brightly coloured metal guardrail on a pavement by the road outside a school

Can prevent children from running into the road at key locations. Also makes drivers aware that they are passing a school. Overuse can lead to drivers to believe they are not in a pedestrian friendly environment.
