1. Why is CCTV being proposed for Wenlake Estate?
CCTV is being introduced to help reduce anti-social behaviour (ASB), deter crime, and improve safety for residents. It also provides evidence to support enforcement action when needed.
2. Who will monitor the CCTV cameras?
Cameras will be monitored by trained Concierge staff at Ilex House during live monitoring hours and by the council’s 24-hour CCTV control room outside these hours.
4. Where will the cameras be located?
CCTV units will be placed at key locations across the estate, including entrances, communal areas, walkways, and door entry systems.
5. How much will this cost me?
If approved, the service will fall under one of the two categories dependant on resident’s feedback:
Category C (5+ cameras), with a weekly service charge of £9.46 per household. This covers monitoring, maintenance, and reporting.
Category D ( 4 cameras max), with a weekly service charge of £2.97 per household. This covers monitoring, maintenance, and reporting.
6. Will the service charge be covered by Housing Benefit or Universal Credit?
Yes, the service charge is eligible for Housing Benefit or Universal Credit adjustments.
7. Who pays for the installation?
The capital cost of installing the cameras will be funded by Wenlake TMO budget. Residents will only pay the ongoing service charge if the proposal is approved.
8. How will my feedback be used?
Your feedback will determine whether CCTV is installed and whether the service charge applies. Camera locations may also be adjusted based on resident input.
9. How do I take part in the consultation?
You can respond via the Let’s Talk Islington platform, complete the ballot paper delivered to your home, or attend a drop-in session.
10. What happens if the proposal is approved?
Installation will begin after procurement. Residents will receive updates on timelines and any temporary access restrictions. Annual reviews will ensure cameras remain in the best locations.
11. Will CCTV footage be shared with anyone?
Footage will only be shared with authorised council staff, the police, or legal authorities for the purpose of investigating crime or anti-social behaviour.
12. How long is CCTV footage stored?
Footage is retained for a limited period in line with council policy and data protection laws, typically 31 days, unless required for an investigation.
13. Who has access to the footage?
Access is restricted to trained council staff and the police when necessary. All staff handling footage are licensed and comply with strict data protection protocols.
14. Is the CCTV system compliant with GDPR?
Yes. The system complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Clear signage will be displayed across the estate to inform residents and visitors.
15. Will cameras record inside my home?
No. Cameras will only cover communal areas, entrances, and walkways. They will not record inside homes or private spaces.
