The council is working on a project in the Highbury and Mildmay wards in Islington to increase understanding of air quality in the local area, increase community engagement on air quality and help the community to better protect themselves and take action to improve air quality. You can check where the Highbury and Mildmay wards are located by checking this ward boundary map.

As part of this air quality project we are:

  • increasing air pollution monitoring across Highbury and Mildmay

  • creating a new website for the community with real-time air quality data, providing quicker and clearer air quality monitoring results

  • delivering citizen science workshops for residents to participate in the collection and analysis of air quality monitoring data, delivering events that promote the new website, and involving the community in improving their understanding of air pollution and how to reduce their exposure to it

You can find more information on the project, including the location of monitors, website, events and citizen science elements, on our air quality website and we will be promoting additional information about the project soon.

Feedback to our survey in 2024:

We held a survey to ask for local people's feedback about air pollution, to help us get a better idea of what you think about this issue and help us tailor the project moving forward. The aim was to:

  • select which information to include on our new air quality website
  • decide on the best engagement, citizen science activities and events to run
  • check how effective the project has been, when we compare the results now to another survey next year

You can read a summary of what people told us.

What we are doing now and how you can get involved

We are running citizen science workshops where local people can learn more about air quality and monitor air quality in the local area. We are also organising events with community groups, schools, care homes and individuals to further engage the community.

We have launched a new interactive air quality website - you can visit the page to see near real-time air quality levels, historical data and a map of monitoring locations.

Please get in touch at pollution@islington.gov.uk if you:

  • Are interested in taking part in a citizen science workshop, either for yourself or for a group or organisation you are part of
  • Would like to host or be involved in an air quality event
