The council is working on a project with the community in the Highbury and Mildmay wards in Islington to increase understanding of air quality in the local area and there are many ways for the community to get involved.

As part of this air quality project we are:

  • increasing air pollution monitoring across Highbury and Mildmay

  • creating a new website for the community with real-time air quality data, providing quicker and clearer air quality monitoring results

  • running citizen science workshops for residents to participate in the collection of air quality monitoring data in their local area

  • delivering events celebrating the project and local community

How to get involved:
  • take part in a citizen science monitoring workshop - we are running citizen science workshops for individuals or groups, where local people can learn more about air quality and monitor air quality in the local area.
  • have a look at our new interactive air quality website and let us know what you think - you can visit the page to see near real-time air quality levels, historical data and a map of monitoring locations.
  • host a website demonstration at your community hub or group

Please use the sign up form on our project page or get in touch at pollution@islington.gov.uk if you are interested in the workshops or events.

Results of initial 2024 survey:

We held a survey to ask for local people's feedback about air pollution, to help us get a better idea of what you think about this issue and help us tailor the project moving forward. The aim was to:

  • select which information to include on our new air quality website
  • decide on the best engagement, citizen science activities and events to run
  • check how effective the project has been, when we compare the results now to another survey next year

You can read a summary of what people told us.
