Works to implement the improvements on St Paul’s Place

Construction works to implement the improvements at the junction of St Paul’s Road and St Paul’s Place will begin on Monday 16 March 2026 and will take approximately four weeks.

The traffic management plan during the works will involve the following temporary measures:

  • St Paul’s Place will be closed to general traffic from the junction with St Paul’s Road to just south of 1 St Paul’s Place. There will be barriers around the work site, but pedestrian access to all properties will be maintained throughout.
  • Vehicle access to St Paul’s Place, Bingham Street, Northampton Park and Northampton Grove will be maintained, but some journeys will be diverted. Diversion signs will be in place throughout the construction period.
  • Parking spaces will be suspended at the following locations:
  1. On the western side of St Paul’s Place, four parking spaces adjacent to 26 Paul’s Road.
  2. On the eastern side of St Paul’s Place, four parking spaces adjacent to 22 and 24 St Paul’s Road.

Improvements to St Paul’s Road zebra crossing

We will also be upgrading the existing zebra crossing outside 56 St Paul’s Road. This scheme will include:

  • Raising the existing zebra crossing outside 56 St Paul’s Road to footway level.
  • Widening and lengthening the existing pedestrian island. The traffic lanes either side of this will be narrowed.

These construction works will begin on Monday 23 March 2026 and will take approximately four weeks.

The traffic management plan during these works will involve the following temporary measures:

  • There will be barriers around the project site, outside 48-58 St Paul’s Road. Temporary traffic signals will be installed at either end of the work area to manage vehicle flow, with one lane running in one direction alternately Pedestrian access to all properties will be maintained throughout.
  • Parking spaces will be suspended opposite 40-48 St Paul’s Road during the works. 4 parking spaces are likely to be suspended.
  • Bus Stops CV and CF on St Paul’s Road will be suspended during the work.

We apologise for any inconvenience that the construction works may cause, and we would like to thank you in advance for your co-operation during this time.

St Paul's Place Consultation

Have your say on our proposals to improve road safety on St Paul’s Place

As part of our commitment to make Islington a greener and healthier borough, we want to introduce measures to make the junction of St Paul’s Place and St Paul’s Road safer.

What are we doing?

We are proposing to implement a side road entry treatment at the junction of St Paul’s Road and St Paul’s Place. The proposed measures are:

  • A raised junction table at the entry to St Paul’s Road. This will involve raising the road surface to be level with the footway and changing the road surface from tarmac to paving blocks.
  • Narrowing the junction from 7.8m to 6.7m
  • Implementing two new areas of greening either side of St Paul’s Place. To do this, we are proposing to reduce the space available to park by approximately 4 metres on each side of the road.

Why are we doing this?

Between 2017 and 2024 there were four serious collisions at this junction, and there have been several other slight collisions. The proposals here will:

  • encourage drivers to reduce their vehicle speeds and turn cautiously
  • allow people walking or wheeling to cross the junction of St Paul’s Place more easily
  • make St Paul’s Place greener and more resilient to future flood risks
