Have your say on potential plans on the land at Maygood Street
Vittoria School was amalgamated with Copenhagen Primary School in September 2023. Since then, the council has been considering what would be the best permanent use of the empty site.
When the school closed, the site wasn’t considered for new housing. But the housing crisis continues to worsen, with over 16,000 people now on the council’s housing register and rising costs due to the increasing demand for temporary accommodation.
The council is now exploring whether the best use of this site is for new homes, including a large number of new genuinely affordable homes.
The first step in this process is to apply to the Secretary of State for Education to change the use of the land from education to housing. Before we do this, we want your feedback on this change of use.
If the application is approved, there will be a more detailed consultation with local residents about what a new housing development could look like.
Why this site
Vittoria School was amalgamated with Copenhagen School in September 2023 and moved to Treaty Street. The site is currently being used on a temporary basis by New River College Medical provision, they will be moving out at the end of the next school year.
The land and buildings are owned by LB Islington
The site is in a residential area (next to Old and New Barnsbury Estate) with excellent transport links and access to amenities
There are sufficient local schools to serve new residents and their families
Developing a site design
The design for new housing development subject to consent from the secretary of State for Education to change to use of the land from education to residential. Consent is not expected to be in place until early next year at the earliest.

What could future buildings look like?
There is no design proposal for the site at this stage because we need approval from the Secretary of State for Education to change the land from education to housing use. This approval is not expected to be granted until early next year at the earliest.
However, here are some things we are exploring:
The scale and layout of the development could include a mixture of building heights, ranging from 3 to 8 storeys. Taller buildings would be placed in the middle of the site to reduce the impact on sunlight and daylight to nearby homes.
We'll be exploring how to make the best use of the space to provide as many new homes as possible, while making sure the design fits in with the surrounding area.
The indicative sketch design above helps describe how the site could be used. We will use this in our application to the Secretary of State.
In line with planning policy, a new housing development on the site would be expected to include well-designed, energy efficient homes, play areas, landscaping and good quality public realm, cycle storage and other associated amenities.
